medium: The 45 hour Yokohama closure is reported by two forwarder bulletins that agree with each other and with our port call series, but no statement from the port authority or Japanese government on the port closure could be retrieved, and one source notes no blanket shutdown of Tokyo and Yokohama container terminals, so the exact scope of terminal closures is uncertain.

  • Severity basis: Measured effects at two or more ports; the portwatch-port-calls series records 3 calls at Yokohama and 2 at Tokyo on 2026-09-20 against daily means of about 36 and 24 over 2026-08-23 to 2026-09-18, with similar falls at Kawasaki and Chiba.

What happened

Typhoon Dujuan passed close to the Kanto region of Japan on 2026-09-21 (21 September 2026), bringing record rainfall, flooding and landslides. Kuehne+Nagel reports that the Port of Yokohama was closed for 45 hours from 2026-09-20 to 2026-09-22. Our port call series shows Yokohama, Tokyo, Kawasaki and Chiba falling to near zero daily calls on 2026-09-20 and 2026-09-21 and returning to normal levels on 2026-09-22. The closure was followed straight away by national holidays on 2026-09-21 to 2026-09-23, so yards stayed full and vessel waits at Yokohama reached 1.5 to 2 days.
