  • Severity basis: Port wide stoppage of 24 hours to seven days; Port Tampa Bay stopped inbound and outbound vessel traffic from 20:00 on 2024-09-25 and its channels reopened at 13:15 on 2024-09-29, about 3.7 days.

What happened

At 20:00 local time on 2024-09-25 (25 September 2024) the Coast Guard set Port Condition Zulu for Tampa Bay ahead of Hurricane Helene, and Port Tampa Bay halted inbound and outbound vessel traffic. A shipping agent's bulletin dated 2024-09-27 still listed Tampa and Port Manatee as closed while the Coast Guard's reopening advice was awaited. Channel surveys with the Army Corps of Engineers began that day. On 2024-09-29 (29 September 2024) the Coast Guard reopened the port under restrictions and the port said ship movements were limited to daylight hours. Fuel tankers, cruise ships and vessels carrying perishable cargo were to return first, and fuel deliveries by land continued throughout.
