What happened

Typhoon Muifa stopped work at the container ports of Shanghai and Ningbo-Zhoushan from 2022-09-13 (13 September 2022) to 2022-09-15 (15 September 2022). The Shanghai International Shipping Institute said Yangshan and other Shanghai terminals would start halting work on the evening of 2022-09-13 and stop all operations by the next morning, and Bloomberg reported that the Meishan terminal in Ningbo would close at midnight. The storm crossed Zhoushan Island on 2022-09-14 and came ashore in Shanghai at 00:30 on 2022-09-15, according to AFP citing state media. Port officials said operations at both ports were due to resume later on 2022-09-15. The storm followed Typhoon Hinnamnor, which had temporarily closed Yangshan a week earlier.

This is a measured change in public data during the event window, compared with a baseline before it. It shows timing, not cause. We describe an event as causing a change only when an official source says so.

Timeline

  1. Zhejiang orders ships back to port, and about 7,400 commercial vessels shelter in Zhejiang ports. Yangshan and other Shanghai terminals begin halting some work in the evening, and the Meishan terminal in Ningbo is due to close at midnight. [s1] [s2]
  2. Muifa crosses Zhoushan Island and Hangzhou Bay. Operations are suspended at the ports of Ningbo and Shanghai and oil and gas work is suspended on Zhoushan. [s3]
  3. The storm comes ashore in Shanghai at 00:30. Port officials say operations at Shanghai and Ningbo are scheduled to resume later in the day. [s4]

Cause

Port and shipping operations were suspended because of Typhoon Muifa, which crossed Zhoushan Island and came ashore in Shanghai on 2022-09-14 and 2022-09-15. Attributed by: NASA Earth Observatory. [s3]

Resolution

2022-09-15 (15 September 2022): Port officials said Shanghai and Ningbo would resume operations later on 2022-09-15; the sources reviewed do not give the time each terminal actually reopened. [s4]
